The protection afforded by a trade mark extends to the country or countries for which that registration is made. In other words, if you are applying for a Community Trade Mark your monopoly in that trade mark covers all 27 member states, if you register a trade make in the UK your protection will extend to the UK only.
It is best practice for a company to protect itself in the county or countries in which it trades. If you trade in the UK only then there is no need to register a trade mark in the EU and vise versa.
If you are a UK company and you have a registered trade mark in the UK and you are looking to expand your business to the rest of the EU, then in this instance you may want to consider trademark registration in the EU.
We can do this for you within 12 months, provided that there are no oppositions.
