Information you need when making a Trademark Application

There are several requirements for registering a trademark and it is important that care is taken when preparing the trademark application. The following are some tips to help ensure the trademark application is completed correctly:

  1. Identify the correct name and address of the applicant;
  2. Another necessity for registering a trademark is a properly formulated listing of the goods or services provided with the mark, this is known as the classification of the mark. Assistance from a trade mark expert is invaluable at this stage, as you want to draft the product description accurately. It may also help to use language that is different from a similar trade mark to help you get a trade mark;
  3. The cost to register a trade mark is £170 and for each additional class £50. These registration costs are a small fee to pay compared to the many benefits of registering a trademark;
  4. If you are registering a trade mark logo then it is important that you provide a good quality image of the mark and attach a specimen when making the application.

Logo

The "drawing," which is a depiction of your trade mark, must show the mark as it is actually used, i.e., as shown by the specimens. The drawing has to be in the JPEG format and has to be a certain size. It is important to note that the JPEG that is uploaded by the applicant is usually printed and scanned by the examiner, so it is imperative that the applicants provides a high resolution of the JPEG logo.

If you are providing a specimen then this must to be a real-world example of how the mark is actually used on the goods or in the offering of the services.

It is advisable that you use the services of a trade mark expert to help you properly register a trademark.
